flowchart TD
A[Prepare: access, lighting, isolation] --> B[Visual: links, studs, wear, corrosion, deformation]
B --> C[Measure: link dimensions and wear]
C --> D[Check: markings, certificates, joining shackles, end connections]
D --> E[Record: maintenance records and survey file]
E --> F[Report: defects beyond limits to CE and class]
- Purpose: verify chain integrity, wear, corrosion, deformation and marking for safe anchoring
- SOLAS basis: SOLAS II-1 Reg 3-13 §3 and §4 — anchor handling winches and all loose gear must be operationally tested, thoroughly examined, inspected, operated and maintained per IMO Guidelines
- Class basis: IACS Rec 79 (Guidance for Anchoring Equipment in Service) and Rec 38 (Chain Inspection Criteria) give in-service inspection methods and acceptance limits
- Certificates: chain and accessories must be tested and marked per class rules; test certificates must be inspected by the surveyor at initial survey and at subsequent surveys when equipment is renewed or retested (MSIS Chap 4 §4.15.3.6)
- Stowage: safe stowage and securing of anchor chains per CSS Annex 8
- Records: inspection findings and measurements entered in the ship’s maintenance records and class survey file; defects beyond limits require renewal or repair
- CL2 role: Second Engineer plans and supervises the inspection, checks records, ensures entries, escalates defects to Chief Engineer and class
