As Chief Engineer, what do you coordinate with the master for dry-dock entry, how do you prepare and divide duties among the engineers, and what must be checked with the dock before undocking?
Short answer
flowchart LR A["Entry: stability, docking plan and shore services agreed with the master"] --> B["In dock: work list, permits, earmarked duties"] B --> C["Underwater survey passed with the class surveyor"] C --> D["Box-up: every opening, valve and plug tallied"] D --> E["Authority to flood signed with the dockmaster"] E --> F["Watch the openings and stern tube for leaks"]
| Officer | Earmarked duties |
|---|---|
| Second Engineer | Engine-room work list, main-engine and boiler jobs, survey items |
| Third Engineer | Sea chests, sea and overboard valves, bilge and ballast, pumps and coolers |
| Fourth Engineer | Auxiliary machinery, fresh-water and steam side, stores and spares |
| ETO | Electrical isolation, shore supply, steering-gear and thruster electrics, cathodic-protection wiring |
| Junior engineer and ratings | Support, staging, cleaning, the box-up tally |
- Docking is a stability and manoeuvring evolution the master and dockmaster control. Give accurate tank soundings for the docking stability.
- Arrive at a moderate trim, a positive and adequate GM and minimal free surface. Stability can be lost when the keel lands on the blocks and as she lifts off.
- Agree the docking plan and the changeover to shore services (power, cooling water, fire main) before the sea-water systems are shut.
- Undocking is the one-way door: every underwater item must be complete, passed and boxed up before flooding.
- The tailshaft, propeller, rudder, shell plating and sea connections cannot be re-examined once afloat.
- Recompute the refloating stability from the on-block soundings. Sign the authority to flood only when the surveyor has signed off, permits are closed and the dock floor is clear.
