How long is an EIAPP Certificate valid, and what keeps it valid?
Short answer
| EIAPP | IAPP | |
|---|---|---|
| Belongs to | the engine | the ship |
| Validity | the life of the engine, no renewal | maximum five years with surveys and endorsements |
| Basis | MARPOL Annex VI regulation 13, NOx Technical Code 2008 | MARPOL Annex VI regulation 9 |
| Kept valid by | staying within the Technical File | the survey and endorsement cycle |
- What it is: the engine’s certificate of meeting the MARPOL Annex VI regulation 13 NOx limit (engines over 130 kW, NOx Technical Code 2008).
- Issued: after the pre-certification survey on the test-bed (ISO 8178), with the Technical File of NOx-critical components, settings and allowable ranges.
- Validity: issued to the engine for the life of the engine; no five-year expiry or renewal; it follows the engine to another ship.
- Contrast: the ship’s IAPP Certificate (regulation 9) has a maximum five-year validity; giving the EIAPP 5 years is the error being tested.
- Kept valid: the engine stays within its Technical File, confirmed at IAPP surveys by the parameter check or direct measurement.
- Invalidated: a major conversion, or NOx-critical components or settings outside the approved range: re-survey and re-certify.
- As Chief Engineer: components, timing and settings within the File; the Record Book of Engine Parameters maintained; any change outside the File means re-certification.
