What are the IMO measures for reducing emissions from ships?

Short answer

Annex VI regulation Measure
12 ozone-depleting substances: no deliberate emissions, no new installations
13 NOx Tier I, II, III by build date; Tier III only in a NOx ECA
14 sulphur 0.50% m/m worldwide, 0.10% in an ECA, or a scrubber
15, 16, 18 VOC management plan, incineration limits, bunker delivery note and sample
22 to 25 EEDI for new ships, EEXI for existing ships
26 to 28 SEEMP, Data Collection System, CII rated A to E
  • Chapter 3 air pollutants: regulation 12 ODS; 13 NOx (Tier I 17.0, Tier II 14.4, Tier III 3.4 g/kWh below 130 rpm; Tier III only in a NOx ECA); 14 sulphur 0.50% worldwide, 0.10% in an ECA, or a scrubber; 15 VOCs; 16 incineration; 18 fuel quality.
  • Chapter 4: technical EEDI for new ships (22, 24) and EEXI for existing ships (25); operational SEEMP (23, 26) with the CII plan, DCS (27, 5,000 GT and above), CII (28, rated A to E; corrective plan for D three years or E).
  • Carbon factors (tonnes CO2 per tonne): diesel or gas oil 3.206, light fuel oil 3.151, heavy fuel oil 3.114, LNG 2.750.
  • Strategy: the 2018 Initial and 2023 Revised GHG Strategies (net-zero by or around 2050); the Net-Zero Framework is the direction of travel.
  • As Chief Engineer: compliant fuel with BDN and sample, ECA changeover in time, the engine within its NOx certification, accurate DCS data; the CII levers are mine: speed, trim, clean hull and propeller.
