Deck · Cargo ships Deck officers navigate the ship and look after its cargo. With experience and exams, they go on to become Captain. Engine · Cargo ships Engine officers run and maintain the ship's engines and machinery. With experience and exams, they go on to become Chief Engineer, head of the engine department. Electro-technical · Cargo ships Electro-technical officers look after the ship's electrical power, electronics, automation and control systems. It is a department of its own — not a subtype of Engine. Cruise hotel · Cruise ships Hotel teams run the restaurants, housekeeping, galley, guest services, spa and entertainment on cruise ships.

Ex-servicemen who passed the Indian Army Class I examination with 15 years of service are exempted from the Class 10 requirement for a CDC (DGS Order 3 of 2019). Army Agniveers with a discharge certificate also qualify for a CDC under DGS Order 12 of 2026.
